Nestled in Scottsdale, DC Ranch traces its roots to an era when settlers embraced the rugged lifestyle of the Arizona desert, working cattle and forging new beginnings. The ranch’s heritage weaves together the aspirations of people from the Midwest, Southwest, and Mexico, capturing the spirit of Arizona.
E.O. Brown – The Pioneer of DC Ranch
In the early 1900s, entrepreneur E.O. Brown arrived from Wisconsin, inspired by the promise of land and opportunity. Brown claimed a section of land near a rare, natural spring in the McDowell Mountains, which he later incorporated into his ranch. This spring, still flowing within DC Ranch today, provided essential water to tanks throughout the area, fueling the growth of the 43,000-acre property over generations.
Origins of the "DC" Brand
Around this time, Brown acquired the "DC" brand from Dr. William Dorr Crosby, who registered it in 1885. Whether standing for “Desert Camp” or Dr. Crosby’s initials, the DC brand marked cattle until the 1990s, establishing a unique identity for the ranch.
A Lasting Partnership
As DC Ranch evolved, E.O.’s son, E.E. “Brownie” Brown, took over and brought in longtime friend Kemper Marley as a partner. Marley, an influential figure in Arizona’s agricultural scene, shared Brownie’s vision, and together they expanded DC Ranch, leading it into a new era.
From cattle trails to a luxury community, DC Ranch stands as a testament to Arizona’s frontier heritage, blending history with modern living.
